The design of the Huawei Nova 9 Series smartphones

Firstly, the Huawei Nova 9 series consist out of two smartphones and they are called the following:

  • Huawei Nova 9
  • Huawei Nova 9 Pro

We will view each smartphones design separately and try spot the differences between the two.

Huawei Nova 9:

The Huawei Nova 9 has a similar look to the Huawei Nova 8 and has the exact size and length. The only major differences between the two in design is the rear camera layout and the colors they come in. Rest of the design is exactly the same between the Huawei Nova 8 and the Huawei Nova 9.

The Huawei Nova 9 will be available in four different colors which been the following:

  • Black
  • Blue
  • Green
  • Violet

Huawei Nova 9 Pro:

Now with the Huawei Nova 9 Pro design, it is basically the same as the Huawei Nova 9, just bigger and its front camera is completely different. Reason for that is, the Huawei Nova 9 Pro offers a better selfie photo and video experience as the Huawei Nova 9. So if you are a selfie lover, then the Huawei Nova 9 Pro is the smartphone to look out for.

The Huawei Nova 9 Pro will also be available in the same colors as the Huawei Nova 9 which are:

  • Black
  • Blue
  • Green
  • Violet

The main features the Huawei Nova 9 series stand out for

Besides the elegant designs of the Huawei Nova 9 series smartphones they are known for taking excellent selfie photos and videos. With a 32MP front camera lens for the Huawei Nova 9 and two front camera lenses of both 32MP capabilities for the Huawei Nova 9 Pro, you cannot go wrong to take the perfect selfie photo or video. If it goes wrong, it mostly the users fault.

Then of course, the entire Huawei Nova 9 series smartphones offer great rear camera specs to ensure beautiful stable photos or videos no matter how far the distance or how wide you want to capture the image. Here is an image that illustrates the exact rear camera specs for the entire Huawei Nova 9 series smartphones.

With this elegant new rear camera layout, not only will you have a unique new smartphones, but will enjoy the quality of photos and videos you will be taking. You will feel like a professional photographer in no time.

Besides the great camera specs, the Huawei Nova 9 series will have 120Hz refresh display. Meaning your new Huawei Nova 9 series smartphone will run smoothly when you touch its screen and will not be lacking in speed or freeze.

The other good feature the Huawei Nova 9 Series provides, is the charging speed. As many users like myself, I do not like to charge my smartphone for long time periods. I need my smartphone to be charged full quickly and will last long. Now both the Huawei Nova 9 and Huawei Nova 9 Pro offer great rapid fast charging speed. Each one is different in how quick they charge to reach full battery capacity, so here is the breakdown:

  • Huawei Nova 9 will charge its battery to full capacity in less than 38 minutes.
  • Huawei Nova 9 Pro will charge its battery to full capacity in less than 20 minutes!

By just looking at the difference charging speed, its astounding and amazing how quick both the Huawei Nova 9 series smartphones charge. Especially the Huawei Nova 9 Pro! If I ever forget to recharge my smartphone, I would hope to charge it full quickly like the Huawei Nova 9 Pro. The one catch is remember you must make use of the charger it comes with in the packaging. Other chargers will charge it slower.

Huawei Nova 8 VS Huawei Nova 9 VS Huawei Nova 9 Pro

The main differences between these three smartphones been the following:

  • Weight – The Huawei Nova 8 is the lightest smartphone to carry out of the three. However, the Huawei Nova 9 series smartphones did gain too much weight to count them as to heavy to carry.
  • Size – The Huawei Nova 9 Pro 0,15 inches bigger than both the Huawei Nova 8 and Huawei Nova 9. While both the Huawei Nova 8 and Huawei Nova 9 has the exact same display size.
  • Chipset – The Huawei Nova 9 series smartphones make use of the latest Snapdragon chipsets, whereas the Huawei Nova 8 makes use of Kirin chipset. Both are very good chipsets.
  • Front Camera – The Huawei Nova 9 Pro offers the best front camera experience out of three smartphones due it has two front camera lenses that have 32 megapixel capability each. Whereas the other two only offer one front camera lens of 32 megapixel capability.
  • Rear Camera – Even though the rear camera layout for the Huawei Nova 8 and the Huawei Nova 9 series smartphones are different, the Huawei Nova 8 offers a better rear camera experience as the Huawei Nova 9 series smartphones. The reason is due to the one rear camera lens of the Huawei Nova 8 offers 14 megapixel capability as the entire Huawei Nova 9 series smartphones. What a downgrade for the Huawei Nova 9 Series!
  • Battery Capacity – The Huawei Nova 9 has the best battery capacity out of the three smartphones. I would have expected the Huawei Nova 9 Pro would take this honor, but not the case.

Overall: The Huawei Nova 9 is very similar with the Huawei Nova 8. However, the Huawei Nova 9 Pro stand out more out of them both in terms of front camera specs and size. But sadly, the Huawei Nova 8 offers better rear camera specs compare to the entire Huawei Nova 9 series. Thus, leaves the question of why Huawei reduced the rear camera specs for the Huawei Nova 9 series. Reviews like this will expose the truth and lead to users rather stick with the Huawei Nova 8 instead. But still, the Huawei Nova 9 series does look impressive in other categories.

Why does the Huawei Nova 9 series look familiar?

Now of course, when you saw this question, you probably wondered why I am asking this question. Maybe let me rephrase it by asking, does the Huawei Nova 9 series look like a smartphone series I reviewed before?

If your answer is yes, you are entirely right! The Huawei Nova 9 series is exactly identical to the Honor 50 series.

HONOR 50 VS HUAWEI NOVA 9

HONOR 50 PRO VS HUAWEI NOVA 9 PRO

Both smartphones are completely identical by placing them against each other. The only major differences they have been the following:

  • Two different smartphones brands.
  • Honor is based on Android GMS platform (Google Play services), whereas the Huawei is based on the Android HMS/Harmony (No Google Play pre-installed services) platform.

Then besides these differences, there are differences in specs between the two different smartphone brands, which can be seen below:

Overall: The Honor 50 series offer way better rear camera and RAM specs compare to the Huawei Nova 9 series. But, the Huawei Nova 9 Pro does way better in the front camera specs as the Honor 50 Pro. I just wonder why Huawei would release a new Huawei Nova smartphone so quickly into the market, but being so identical to their new smartphone brand competitor that was part of them until last year? Probably a battle to see who will attract more users with a similar design and features.

Conclusion

The Huawei Nova 9 series does look beautiful and has some good features like the excellent front camera specs for the Huawei Nova 9 Pro and the fast rapid recharge capabilities for the entire series. It is really impressive. However, I do not understand what Huawei is trying to do.

First, they just launched the Huawei Nova 8 last month that has almost the exact same features as the Huawei Nova 9 series. Just has better rear camera specs as the Huawei Nova 9 series. It is like they compete themselves.

Then finally as I revealed, the Huawei Nova 9 series is completely identical to the Honor 50 Series that launched earlier this year. Exact design and almost exact same specs. The only major differences is the brands itself, the platforms both these smartphone brands run on and then some technical spec differences. Was the Huawei Nova 9 series just made to compete against the Honor smartphone brand?

It does feel like it, as Huawei is a well-known brand worldwide, while Honor is not known worldwide yet. Yes, Honor is known in certain countries, but not everywhere whereas Huawei is. This might be Huawei’s strategy to capitalize the sales in the countries that does not sale any Honor smartphones yet. South Africa is a good example for it as the Honor smartphone brand has been mentioned, but not sold yet in the South African market. Thus, I strongly believe that is the whole plan with the Huawei Nova 9.

Overall, Huawei Nova 9 series does look like a good smartphone series to look at, but would take a smartphone that is not pre-installed with Google applications? That may be a big factor against this series, especially when the Honor 50 series becomes known and available worldwide.

So I will leave the final question for you:

Would you consider trying the Huawei Nova 9 series?

  1. Ooh, this phone looks stunning.  Elegant design indeed. I had a Huawei P8 and a P10 before I switched back to Samsung and I found the user interface of Huawei and Samsung very similar.

I’m happy with my Samsung at the moment (my husband’s hand-me-down Galaxy S10) but to answer your question, yes, if I was paying for a handset I would consider getting a Huawei again because they are such value for money – and the Nova range looks gorgeous.  It doesn’t bother me that it’s not pre-loaded with Google applications – that way I get to choose what I want to load.  (And I would love a phone to come not pre-loaded with Facebook because it irritates me if I can’t remove the app).

The Huawei Nova 9 series smartphones are beautiful. Glad you consider the Huawei Nova 9 series even though it does not have pre-installed Google applications. The smartphones itself does have good specs as well.

  2. The marketing issue here interests me hugely. Why would you introduce the Nova 9 only one month after Nova 8? Will there be a Nova 10 next month? Apparently, Huawei did not explain this very well and made a surprise announcement. I also saw that your review concentrated more on other than phone capabilities: battery loading and camera capacity. I guess they have become very important nowadays.

I am about to buy a new mobile phone and will give Huawei some consideration as well.

I agree with you regarding the marketing issue. This will cause users they not wanting to select a new Huawei Nova series smartphone due next month a new better version can arrive the next month. Thus, hurts Huawei marketing more. However, if it is to capture sales in countries that do not have Honor 50 series smartphones, then they can get the sale before Honor 50 series ever appear in those countries.

However, the Huawei Nova 9 series smartphones do look impressive and comparing its specs with others, it is doing well. If you going to select a Huawei Nova 8 series smartphone, please let us know your experience with it.

Thank you for taking the time to comment.
